Mesothelioma - Treatment Procedure

There is no correct or incorrect treatment of mesothelioma, since each case is considered separately. The treatment is chosen for the patient depends on various diagnostic tools such as X-ray radiation, MRIS, CT scans, biopsies, etc. Cancer treatment in principle aimed at removing the malignant cells and maintaining the healthy ones. Currently, three main options are available for patients. They include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

The course of treatment depends on the nature of mesothelioma and the location of the tumor, the size of the tumor, the extent to which the cancer has spread, the age of the patient, his general health, etc. A team of specialists would be involved in the treatment of the disease, such as an oncologist (cancer specialist), pulmonologist (lung specialist), radiologist, etc.

Surgery can be performed on mesothelioma patients, either with a view to healing or for keeping the patient more comfort and improving the quality of life. Mostly, curative surgery is not an option, because the disease is diagnosed at a later stage. Radiation is often recommended for patients whose health is too weak for surgery. It has fewer side effects than chemotherapy and is easier to tolerate. There are various forms of radiation therapy available. External beam radiation is the nature of the radiation emanating from a machine outside the body and is addressed to the affected areas. Brachytherapy is the kind of radiation, in which radioactive material is directly into the lungs or abdomen.

Chemotherapy offers relief from the terrible symptoms of the disease. May be in future days that would help extend the life of patients. It is given in the form of pills or injected. Two drugs often in combination for better results. Other drugs are administered to the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. Some patients find the side effects too difficult to bear that they decide not to undergo therapy.

Clinical trials are studying new treatments for a particular disease. These promising tests have patients who are willing to try before they get approval from the FDA. How ever the pros and cons of the process must be carefully considered before it is ready to meet them. Patients can talk with their doctor in detail before making a final decision to participate.

Apart from the conventional treatments are recommended alternative therapies for patients. They are potential treatment of the disease or its symptoms. They may include the use of vitamins or herbs. The patients may also participate in therapies such as acupuncture, massage or hypnosis.

Researchers are trying hard to find a cure for this malignant cancer. Combination treatments have been successful in increasing the life of patients. The development of the technology also offers new hope for the unfortunate victims of mesothelioma. How ever, the treatment can vary from person to person.
