Sun Tanning Safety - Myths About Sun Tans - Counteract UV Rays

There is a myth about sun tanning. The myth is that the heat is what actually turns your skin brown or red in the sun. This is a false statement. Ultra Violet Rays are the true component that changes the color of sun bathers. UV Light exposure can severely damage skin and can lead to skin cancer with out the proper protection from the sun.

Earth's atmosphere acts as a shield from UV Rays. This layer is called the OZONE layer and filters harmful radiation from the sun. Because there is so much pollution the ozone layer is actually thinning and more radiation or UV rays are stronger. This means UV is more harmful now than ever.

There are ways to counter-act Ultra-Violet Rays. The most common form of protection and probably the best source is Sun block Lotions. SPF or Sun Protection Factor is the measurement system used measure the length of time a product (Sun Block) protects delicate skin against bad or severe sun exposure.

Example: When your skin is exposed to UV for approx 10 minutes then your skin would normally turn red with dense UV rays. But when you apply sunscreen of SPF 15 then it would take about fifteen times longer or about 2 1/2 hrs for your skin to burn.

Remember, blocking UVA and UVB is important...

Aloe Vera is an all time favorite for sun burn treatment. Not to mention the cool gel or spray is quite relieving. There is nothing like taking Aloe out of the fridge and having your thirsty skin soak it up. It is soothing but the cold bites when the Aloe is first applied.
