Lung Cancer Chemotherapy
Lung cancer is mostly treated by surgery, but it is possible only sometimes, which is operable at the time of diagnosis. This treatment includes the removal of a cancerous tumor or entire lobe of the lung. In this type of cancer there is a possibility of reappearance of cancer after surgery. In order to avoid reappearance, Chemotherapy is a very successful treatment nowadays.
Chemotherapy is the treatment that uses drugs to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells. It also reduces the pain and other problems caused due to lung cancer. Chemotherapy drugs are given via injecting in vein through Catheter and thin tube or as pill and thus chemo drugs reach in all parts of the body. Chemotherapy treatment depends on the type of cancer, stage of cancer and current health of the patient. Sometimes additional Adjuvant Chemotherapy is required along with the surgery.
There are many types of lung cancer drugs used like gemcitabine, docetaxel, paclitaxel, carboplatin vinorelbine, cisplatin, etc. and all these may be used individually or in combination as per the need. The sessions of Chemotherapy depend on the type of lung cancer and it may last for several days or may be for some weeks with the remaining period.
Chemotherapy treatment could available in hospital, clinic or may be at home. But the way to provide this treatment totally depends on the drugs that are given to the patient and the health of patients. Chemotherapy helps to reduce the size of the tumor or helps to avoid it from spreading. Your doctor performs some tests to decide, whether the combination Chemotherapy is useful for you or not.
Chemotherapy may produce some unpleasant side effects such as nausea, omitting, weight loss, hair loss, menopause, mouth sores, etc. and most of the side effects are temporary and can be cured by using other medicine during Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy also kills healthy cells along with damaged cells and so side effects occur. The side effects depend on the type of drug, amount taken and the duration of the treatment.
Chemotherapy could damage the blood producing cells of bone marrow, which affect on the blood cell count. This is very serious matter and it may increase the risk of infection, fatigue and shortness of breath, discoloration and bleeding after minor cuts and injuries.
