Asbestos in Your Home

The asbestos is one of those dangers that we can not see, and symptoms of exposure to asbestos usually 20 to 40 years to develop ... but they are usually 100% fatal. So you get some basic education now, very worthwhile could be in a few decades ...

* Brittle - when dry, can be crumbled, pulverized or to a powder by hand pressure
* Non-friable, which can not be reduced to powder by hand pressure

# 1. Transition pipe (not brittle) - you can easily recognize by removing a registry of the cover in the slab portion of your home. It looks like a pipe and cement are very rough, uneven edges around the opening (just like the pictures). Those rough edges are a problem, another is that a transition tubes are not flexible and often crack under or inside the slab to create more rough surfaces and airborne fibers. If you suspect that your air ducts are made of asbestos cement - have a professional to sample and laboratory tests - this is the only full-proof way to determine whether they contain asbestos and what kind of asbestos it is.

Another application was the transition pipe chimney flue or its isolation. As an insulation performing well, unless significantly deteriorated, falling apart (just like in the picture, what often happens when it is used on the outside, the roof over parts of the chimney).

Transition pipe used as a primary chimney flue, without metal liner within, creates a problem when she cracks, and starts leaking exhaust in the attic or living area. Therefore, all vent pipes by the house residential groups and the attics are now required to double, galvanized metal, or type-B, and I highly recommend replacing the transition of pipes and disposing of it correctly.

# 2. Paper wrap insulation of hot air flue pipe joints (fragile) - When it comes to the boiler or furnace replacement, its vent pipe may have to be disassembled - as the asbestos is, this process should be done by a professional asbestos.

# 3. Vermiculite insulation (fragile) - is a silver-gold to gray-brown mineral that is flat and shiny in its natural state and puffed and dull in its expanded form (EPA).

Tons of Vermiculite based insulating material is still the Chicago country houses, usually in the attics and wall cavities, some of it might be heavily contaminated with asbestos. This mineral was discovered near the town of Libby, Montana (Grace mines) in 1881, and mined between the vroege'20s to the early jaren'90 (data shows that 70 -80 percent of all vermiculite sold in the world in which time came from contaminated Libby, Montana mine) and distributed under the name "Zonolite". With or without asbestos Vermiculite looks very closely together, and no distinction can be made without laboratory tests. So if you recognize your own material that looks like one of the photos, make sure that they are assessed by an expert;

- Do not disturb (vacuuming, sweeping, dusting)

- If sweeping / cleaning is necessary, wet it first to ensure that there is no substance in this process

_ Stop any remodeling process in which Vermiculite was discovered or that could lead to disruption Vermiculite.

# 4. Sprayed on Textures Maxima (fragile) - some of us love it, a lot of use because it hides the roughness, and much more not like it. When it comes to remodeling you should test for the presence of asbestos, because the use of a traditional scraping method will produce much substance.

# 5. Asbestos cement roofing and rail connection - no danger under normal circumstances (not brittle), but it can add several thousand dollars in your remodeling or demolition project when you are faced with removal.

# 6. Fire (fragile and not brittle) - asbestos-containing panels of different types (which resembles some cement slabs, or thick cardboard and paper), drawn up above the ovens, surrounding furnace / boiler room in the furnaces and boilers (I've seen some within the old forced air furnace uses a liner of a heat exchanger enclosure walls), as a furnace or boiler insulation.

The local legislation would require that you asbestos inspection to the application for a demolition or construction / remodeling permits, so check with them first.
