My Journey With Cancer

I always like traveling, but mostly I had any idea of my destination. This trip was very different from the rest, with more twists and turns and elements of the unexpected than any of the others. So, to get a start, I will begin in January 2002.

I was an assistant supervisor in the Vitamin part of a busy Pharmacy (Drug Store). I was promoted to this position after 12 months as a casual worker. It seemed to take a while to adjust to this new role, early start, stay close to the store, the shuttle back and forth. I liked myself strengthening "I will get used to it!"

Even when I heard a comment from the pharmacy manager via a colleague "is Alfred okay? He lost much weight."

"Yes, I'm okay! Just get used to is still a few weeks ..."

The weeks went by, I was still losing weight, feeling tired, appetite was either not present or was there something specific that I just had to have!

An evening on the bus back home I started to cough and cough and I felt nauseous. I came home, walked up the stairs, and just managed to go to the bathroom where I vomited severely. During the night I was sweating abundantly, wake up completely soaked. But I kept going: a Emergence bus to the city in the morning, hurrying to the station and then a train for the rest of the trip. So it went on, five days per week.

One weekend, I could barely get out of bed. I've done nothing that weekend, but then returned to work on Monday.

The thing is that I enjoyed my work, I was good at it. I enjoyed the interaction with customers, I was helping them and meeting their needs. I loved my work colleagues, the owners of businesses, everything! So I went.

Then one day my girlfriend confronted me. She was worried about my weight loss. She knew that I do not particularly like orthodox medicine, but they urged me to continue and a doctor. I refused, but I was more coughing, sweating more nights, and feeling weaker. I finally relented.
