Discover the Effects of Coffee on Colon Cancer
Drinking coffee may help prevent colorectal cancer, according to a group of researchers in Germany. They have a powerful antioxidant compound in the popular brew that appears to the activity of phase II enzymes, which are thought to protect against colon cancer, the second most important cause of cancer death in the United States.
Although researchers suspected for years that consumption of coffee may offer some protection against cancer as a result of the drink is high antioxidant content, this study is the first time a specific, highly active anti-connection is demonstrated in the design.
To investigate the theory that the coffee fights cancer, researchers prepared a conventional coffee beverage using roasted, decaffeinated beans from Columbia. Specially prepared extracts of the brew were then exposed to laboratory preparations of human intestinal cells for three days, and the results were compared with cells that were not exposed to the coffee.
The anti-cancer compound, called methylpyridinium, almost exclusively found in coffee and coffee products, but is not found in significant quantities in other foods and beverages.
